Bunny’s Dreamland: paintings by Brooke Denton

Smoke the moon presents Bunny’s Dreamland: a solo exhibition of paintings by Brooke Denton. Santa Fe local Brooke Denton’s deeply saturated and surreal large scale paintings will be on view throughout the casita gallery.

Bunny’s Dreamland exists as much as it doesn't. It is familial while being impossible: a true waking dream. Denton’s gestural revelry takes inspiration from a playful collage of reference points. Instagram alter egos, old found and family photographs, and spliced canvases all inform the way narrative is rendered in the artist’s work. What emerges are worlds that are maximal not only in visual style but also in possibility. Denton’s work joyfully explores the pigmented edges of incongruity; she paints the void of memory as a realm of explosive possibility.

Throughout Denton’s paintings she renders both narrative and material in a surreal collage of reference points. Figures known and imagined are transformed. In the works in Bunny’s Dreamland loosely takes inspiration from photographs Denton receives from family and friends. These familiar ties are then set about in lambent scenes. The domestic and daily is rendered in searingingly vivid patterns and tones. Bunny’s Dreamland luxuriates in the gaps of lineage and identity—it is becoming another while looking at yourself.
